AI Chat to Markdown — Universal Markdown Export

Export conversations from any AI platform to clean, portable Markdown files in one click. Code blocks, math, tables, and thinking traces all preserved.

Code Blocks Preserved

Fenced code blocks with language tags stay intact. Syntax-highlighted snippets copy exactly as they appeared in the AI response, ready for pasting into your editor.

LaTeX Math Rendering

Both inline ($...$) and display ($$...$$) LaTeX notation are exported verbatim. Paste into Obsidian, Typora, or any MathJax-compatible renderer and the math just works.

Tables and Lists

Markdown tables, ordered lists, unordered lists, and nested structures all come through with their original formatting. No more re-creating tables by hand.

Thinking Blocks

Claude extended thinking, DeepSeek reasoning traces, and other chain-of-thought blocks are captured inside collapsible details elements so you can review the AI's process.

Images and Links

Image URLs and hyperlinks are preserved as Markdown image and link syntax. External references remain clickable and inline images render wherever Markdown is supported.

100% Local

Export runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server. Your conversations never leave your machine — the extension parses the DOM and generates the file locally.

Why Markdown Is the Universal Format for AI Chat Exports

When you select and copy text from an AI chat interface, you lose all structure. Code blocks become plain text, tables collapse into spaces, math vanishes, and images disappear. Markdown solves this because it is both human-readable and machine-parseable.

Markdown is supported natively by thousands of tools — note-taking apps, documentation generators, static site hosts, wikis, and databases. A Markdown file from AI Chat Exporter works today in Obsidian, Notion, Logseq, Bear, Joplin, GitBook, Docusaurus, Hugo, Jekyll, and virtually any text editor.

Because the format is plain text, your exports are future-proof. They will open in any editor fifty years from now without proprietary software. This is the single biggest advantage over PDF or Word exports, which require specific applications to view and edit.

What Gets Preserved in a Markdown Export

The extension does a deep traversal of the AI chat DOM and reconstructs the conversation structure in Markdown. Here is what comes through:

Element How It Is Exported Example
Code blocks Fenced with triple backticks and language tag ```python ... ```
Inline code Single backtick wrapping `variable`
LaTeX (display) Double dollar signs $$E = mc^2$$
LaTeX (inline) Single dollar signs $x^2$
Tables Standard Markdown pipe tables | Col | Col |
Ordered lists Numbered Markdown lists 1. First
Unordered lists Bullet-point Markdown lists - Item
Links Inline Markdown links [text](url)
Images Markdown image syntax ![alt](url)
Thinking traces Collapse block with details/summary <details>

Real-World Use Cases

Markdown export is the most versatile output format because it plugs into almost every knowledge-management and documentation workflow.

Obsidian and Personal Knowledge Management — Drop exported files into your Obsidian vault and they are immediately searchable, linkable, and part of your graph. Use wikilinks to connect conversations to your other notes.

Notion Import — Notion accepts Markdown natively via paste or file import. Each export becomes a full page in your workspace with code blocks, headings, and tables intact.

GitHub Gists and Repos — Share code snippets from AI conversations by pasting the Markdown directly into a gist or repository README. Code fences render automatically on GitHub.

Documentation — Teams using Docusaurus, MkDocs, Hugo, or Jekyll can drop AI conversation exports into their docs site. The Markdown renders with syntax highlighting and math support out of the box.

Research Notes — Academics and researchers archive AI-assisted brainstorming sessions as Markdown files, preserving the mathematical notation and structured reasoning for later review.

Markdown vs. Plain Text Copy

When you select all text in a ChatGPT response and paste it elsewhere, here is what you lose:

What You Lose Plain Text Copy AI Chat Exporter Markdown
Code language tags Lost Preserved
Table structure Collapsed to spaces Full pipe-table syntax
Math notation Rendered as images or lost Raw LaTeX preserved
Heading hierarchy Flattened H1 through H6
Image URLs Lost Markdown image syntax
Nested lists Collapsed Proper indentation
Thinking traces Lost Captured in details blocks
Metadata (model, date) Lost Emitted as Source, Date, and Model fields
